The Coffee Cantata will then be performed at 3:00 p.m. in the Imperial Pavilion. In the Imperial Pavilion of Lieser Castle, this charming musical ode to the once-trendy beverage will be performed amidst a coffee table spread featuring the finest cakes—the Coffee Cantata. “OH, HOW SWEET THE COFFEE TASTES!” With these words, Liesgen raves in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Coffee Cantata, which premiered in 1734 at the Leipzig coffeehouse “Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum.” The cheerful story tells of a father’s futile attempt to wean his daughter off her daily coffee habit. Accounts of organ exams and weddings show that Bach himself was not averse to the new beverage; his household also owned numerous coffee pots. Among Bach’s seven surviving children were 26-year-old Catharina Dorothea from his first marriage and 8-year-old Elisabeth Juliana Friederica, known as Liesgen.
